Matt Cutts
Head Webmaster, Google
Matt
Cutts
is currently the head of the Google's Webspam team (Google’s
anti-spam
Department). He joined Google as a Software Engineer in January 2000. Before Google, he was
working on his Ph.D. in computer graphics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has an M.S. from UNC-Chapel Hill, and B.S. degrees in both mathematics and computer science from the University of Kentucky. Matt wrote SafeSearch, which is Google's family filter. In addition to his experience at Google, Matt held top-secret clearance while working for the Department of Defense, and he's also worked at a game engine company. He claims that Google is the most fun by far.
Matt talks about webmaster-related issues on his site at http://www.mattcutts.com/blog. Cutts is one of the co-inventors listed on one of the most well-known patent filings from Google, which involves search engines and web spam, and was the first to publicly propose using historical data to identify link spam.
In early 2007, Cutts announced that Google had developed an algorithm to reduce the number of
Google bombs appearing in the search results. Google, Inc. maintains an index of websites and other online content, and makes this information freely available to anyone with an Internet connection. The Company’s automated search technology helps people obtain nearly instant access to relevant information from its online index. Google generates revenue primarily by delivering online advertising. With thousands of third-party websites to comprise the Google Network, its AdSense program delivers direct ads and generates revenue for businesses, as well as for Google, while enhancing the user experience. In March 2008, the Company completed the acquisition of DoubleClick, which offers online advertisement serving and management technology to advertisers, Web publishers and advertisement agencies.
Gary Kremen
Founder
of Match.com, original registrant of Sex.com
Current Position as CEO, Clean Power Finance
Gary Alan Kremen originally founded the personals site Match.com, as well as registered several premiere domain names in the early days of the internet, including Sex.com, Jobs.com, Housing.com, and Autos.com. Born in the Chicago area, he graduated from Niles West High School in 1981, then obtained a bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from Northwestern Univeristy in 1985, and finally an MBA from Stanford University in 1989.
Kremen launched software firm Los Altos Technology after graduating from Stanford, and headed the company until its investors replaced him with a new CEO in 1993. Kremen then founded the Board of Electric Classifieds, Inc. – the first company to bring classified ads to the internet. Funded by private investors, the Board launched its first online personals service: Match.com. After trouble with venture capitalists, Kremen eventually left Match.com in March 1996, remaining on the board of Electric Classifieds. Over Kremen's objections, Match.com was sold to Cendant Corporation for $7 million in 1998, then sold by Cendant to Ticketmaster a year and a half later for $50 million. $50,000 of the proceeds went to Kremen, along with a free lifetime membership to Match.com.
From 1995 to 1996, Kremen founded and served as president of NetAngels.com, Inc., an internet profiling and personalization company which suggests compatible web sites to users. He left when NetAngels merged with Boston personalization software firm Firefly Network, Inc. in 1997, shortly before Firefly was sold to Microsoft in 1998 in a reported $40 million deal.
In 1999, Kremen was listed as an equity-holding officer or director of Brightcube, Inc. Kremen is credited as a primary inventor on the patent for dynamic web pages, US patent number 5706434, which was later sold for over $1,250,000.
A 2007 New York Times article on "millionaires who don't feel rich" reported that Kremen’s estimated net worth to be $10 million.
Currently, Kremen resides in Rancho Santa Fe, California, and is the founder and acting CEO for a residential solar financing start-up company called Clean Power Finance, Inc.
Sex.com saga
Kremen first registered the domain name Sex.com in 1994. In 1996, Stephen M. Cohen contacted Network
Solutions, claiming that Kremen had transferred the domain to him. Knowing this to be a fraudulent claim, Kremen took the matter to the courts, where he struggled to make a case on limited resources and alone against Cohen's multi-million dollar pornography empire. Kremen took the upper hand when two of Cohen's rivals in the adult industry, Seth Warshavsky and Ron Levi, helped fund Kremen's case. After a long and
complicated legal battle headed up by Charles Carreon, the domain was eventually deemed a valid and rightful property, and returned to its original possessor, Gary Kremen.
In the meantime, however, Cohen had profited vastly from the property. Kremen tried to wrest back some of these profits through further court action, and was awarded a judgment of $65 million against Cohen. Kremen also successfully litigated again Network Solutions in the matter of registration. Cohen, on the other hand, fled to Mexico and moved the money offshore.
On October 28th, 2005, the Los Angeles Times reported that Cohen had been arrested in Mexico and turned over to US Authorities. Kremen eventually sold Sex.com in 2006 to Boston-based Escom LLC for $12 million in cash and stock.
